Woodlawn Middle School's commitment to preparing our scholars to be college and career ready is extended through our participation in the AVID program.
The AVID elective is currently being offered to students in grades 7 and 8. AVID students apply to be in the program and interview with teachers before being accepted into the program. Effective Learning Habits for College and Career Readiness is offered to students in grade 6 as an intro to the AVID program.
AVID students work toward success by committing themselves to a variety of obligations- including acceptable attendance, appropriate behavior and 1-2 hours of study/homework time per night.

AVID MISSION IN BCPS IS TO
Close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society by expanding access to and support in college and career pathways including AP, IB, dual enrollment, and CTE.
AVID IN BCPS
BCPS and AVID have worked in partnership for over 20 years to advance the college and career readiness of all students in BCPS and AVID is currently implemented in 61 schools, in grades K-12. AVID trained elementary educators and AVID Elective teachers in middle and high school serve over 7,00 students in BCPS!
While AVID has a long history in BCPS, it was a movement started in one teacher's classroom in 1980 and has grown to a community of educators, students, and families throughout the country, where AVID serves over 2 million students in 46 states!
AVID IN MIDDLE SCHOOL
AVID is implemented in 23 BCPS middle schools which implement AVID schoolwide, as described in the AVID Elementary model, and also offer an AVID elective class that provides additional support for students achieving average grades with a determination to advance to more rigorous courses, with the support of the AVID Elective class, in order to pursue a four-year college degree.
